During the period of partial lockdown, it may have appeared as though the economy was being sacrificed in the name of public health. However, the global attempt to halt the spread of the pandemic ultimately never departed from the basic logic of capitalist politics: politics in the interest of business.

The armed presence along the perimeter of Ħal Far—essentially, the border between ‘us’ and ‘them’—was a display of state power and a pretense of care for its loyal citizens. At once, it disciplined the diseased ‘other’ and fenced the rest off from it.
Crisis must not be an excuse for discrimination and injustice. On the contrary, solidarity is our weapon during these difficult times.

Why do COVID-19 updates skew so much towards death and not recovery? We need to be particularly cautious in letting numbers of death records beat us into fear. Or do we assume that people will not act responsibly unless they are shocked into a panic?
If you believe that COVID-19 was sent by divine providence to make this world a fairer, greener place, you are mistaken. It’s up to us to strive for this goal. A virus has no such mission.
